Umayyad mosque
The Grand Mosque of Damascus is located at the very center of the old town at the end of Souk Hamidieh. It is an impressive building, to say the least: well proportioned, beautifully designed and adorned with many mosaic panels. The Mosque is famous for holding the tomb of the great Sultan of Syria and Egypt, Saladin (Salaheddin) and a shrine which is said to contain the head of John the Baptist.
