St. James' Church

The church's history is an eventful one. It was first build as a Benedictine priory and church in 1114 AD and then expanded, restyled and restored in the following centuries. The St. James’ rood-loft (a large sacred crucifix) was one of the few that survived Reformational destruction. It was hidden in 1561 and only rediscovered in 1810. During the 18th century, a day school was held in the church.
