Old religion
In the late 12th century the Christian church finally suppressed the pagan beliefs that had survived until then. Some prominent Avebury stones were given names related to the devil ("Devil's Chair", "Devil's Brand irons", "Devil's Den") and were toppled and buried. Of the originally 100 stones, today only 27 remain.
