Tommy Thumb
Amid giant "hoodoos" (tall thin spires of rock) of Bryce Canyon's Amphitheater, this tiny tree bravely holds its ground. Archaeological surveys show that the Bryce Canyon area has been inhabited for at least 10,000 years by subsequently the Anasazi, Fremont, Paiute and Mormone culture. The Paiute Indians believed that hoodoos were the "Legend People" whom the trickster Coyote turned to stone. They named the hoodoos "Anka-ku-wass-a-wits", which is Paiute for "red painted faces".
