The word "hutong" is Mongolian in origin, meaning "water well". In the old time with the digging of new wells, came the new communities. Hutongs, characterised by small, winding alleys with a strong community feel, link courtyard houses, where a single door leads from the street to an inner courtyard containing the homes of several families.
