470 million bicycles
With a world-record of 470 million bicycles on the road, China is known as the "Kingdom of Bicycles". Cycling is the way to get around in China. Entire families share one bike, sometimes all at once: mother on the back fender carrying her baby, child on the crossbar and dad peddles. There are bicycle repairmen on every corner. With cars by now a generally accepted phenomenon in the streets of Beijing, bikes are disappearing. But for the time being, bicycles will take the Chinese to the market.
