To Haggle or Not to Haggle
As in many countries, bargaining is common practice in China. Street markets are frequented by throngs of shoppers looking for the best deals. You can bargain for almost anything from luxury goods to food, provided you come prepared. That is, know the correct local price, or at least know how much you are prepared to pay for it in China. It helps to bear in mind that the seller will quote a price he thinks you'll find reasonable. Divide this number by three (rules of thumb vary) and then slowly work your way up, walk away if need be. Remember bargaining is generally supposed to be a friendly, social art and honey (a smile) catches more flies than vinegar.
