Travelogue

During my travels, I usually collect three or four personal accounts which I then recount in emails to friends. And since they find them very entertaining, I reckoned you might too. A travelogue is born.

Hi,

It has been a while since I last sent word. From my base camp at Creveen Lodge, I have been driving the coastal road with its many harbours, hiking the Ladies Way, visiting stone circles and taking lots of pictures around the Beara peninsula last week. It’s a marvellous area, with a special Gulf stream climate. On Friday I “did” the Ring of Kerry and at night went to the local pub for a great night of irish dancing (see attachments 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Yesterday, I set off north to Killarney to stay at the Neptunes hostel and visit Killarney National Park and Ring of Dingle. Great hostel, by the way. Friendly staff, great location, good facilities, lots of beds. Unfortunately I arrived at the same time two Dutch school groups did, very loud people and utterly uncontrollable. The teachers seem to think this is acceptable behavior, whereas the hostel staff keeps apologizing in vicarious shame.

The Dingle peninsula is definitely one of my favorites. Although I didn’t quite end up at the locations I had planned for, I took some very nice shots there. As I spend more time in Ireland, I am getting used to Murphy’s law "Whatever can go wrong will go wrong, usually at the worst possible time, in the worst possible way". The way to go is with the flow, you’ll always end up at another terrific location instead. Again I visited heritage sites, drove the coastal road, enjoyed the great scenery, captured the characteristic landscape features and even immortalized a rainbow.

Tomorrow I am moving my luggage, my car and myself to the Sleepzone The Burren. But for now I am the proud and only occupant of a room for four, at sixteen euros a night, with WiFi. How about that! But enough about me, how is your trip?
